Shigar Valley


Shigar valley one of the most beautiful valleys of Baltistan, Gilgit-Baltistan. This valley is almost 7600 meters above sea level. World highest mountains, Lush green fields, meadows, natural Springs and hill climbs Grab the tourists.

K-2 and Glaciers are towards the north of this valley. Khaplu is in the west and Nagar Gilgit towards the east. Skardu is in the south and in the north China is located.

First of all, to reach Shigar valley tourists from Islamabad can travel by Air or road to Skardu. Shigar was formerly part of the Skardu District. But now this is a separate district. Even more, the name of this valley is on the name of the Shigar river which flows from the middle of the valley. The source of water of the Shigar river is Baltoro and Biafo Glaciers. This is also the territories of the Indus river. It joins the Indus river in Skardu near Nangthog. Along with this river, there are two more rivers that do irrigation in this Valley. Those rivers are Basoo and Braldo rivers respectively.

Capital and Valleys

Shigar Mal is the capital of this district. Where Hospital, College and likewise high school is located. There are lush green towns on both sides of the Shigar River. Among them Churka, Gulappur, wazirpur, Alchori, Bahsoo, Gulappur and Basha are noteworthy.

Unique mountain

There is a green mountain after crossing the canal on the east at almost 30 km away from Shigar. Locally which is called Pazowal. This stone is softer than other stones in this region. Different Utensils and decorative items for homes are made from this stone. It is said about the vessels mentioned. That if poisonous food is poured in the vessels made of this stone. Then it automatically starts to boil. Because of which poisonous effect goes away. Furthermore, the powder of this stone is used to eliminate poisonous effects. If someone is bitten by a honey bee, snake or any other poisonous creature.

There are other mountains in the valley which are famous in natural resources. Among them Salajit, marble, gold and turquoise reserves are present.

Balti is the language of this valley. The people of this valley are hospitable, brave and jealous. Most people’s profession is farming and livestock raising. The land of this valley is fertile and this valley is famous for potatoes in the Baltistan region. Similarly, different fruit trees are also present in this valley.


The Amacha families Fort in this valley is also a famous tourist point in this valley. Which is 4 hundred years old. This Fort is now converted into a Resort and a museum is established in one portion where old utensils, letters, and other old things are preserved.

Home of K-2 and Glaciers

Baltoro, Basho, and Baraldo glaciers and K-2 are also located in this valley. Basho valley is the ancient and largest valley. This valley is the base camp of the 4 highest mountains in the world. For the reason that this valley is attractive for trekkers and mountaineers.

Even more, Hot Springs are also present in different places in this valley. Chrotron is one of famous among them. The water of these springs is good for different skin diseases.

Finally June, July, and August are the suitable months for trekking. Because of that during these months, the valley is full of tourists from all over the world.
